From Pixels to Powerful Change: Photogrammetry Revolutionizing Social Justice Efforts with GRX and USC Bass Labs

On October 18th, the USC Charlotta Bass Journalism & Justice Lab was warmly received at the Fisher Museum for a captivating and illuminating session on photogrammetry. This engaging event, expertly led by GRX Immersive labs, aimed to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools to drive social change through this innovative technique.

As part of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, the Bass Lab is the West Coast’s first AI-powered Black media archive and experimental storytelling space. Dedicated to exploring how African Americans have used media to bear witness to social justice issues, Bass Lab looked to GRX to lead them through experiments and hands-on training to learn the fundamentals of digital photogrammetry.

Students from Dr. Richardson’s and Prof. Jameela Hammond’s  Second Draft Project class (JOUR 499), are joined by Alton Glass and Roman Combs (center) from GRX Immersive Labs at a visit to the USC Fisher Museum of Art.

Photogrammetry, the process of extracting three-dimensional information from two-dimensional images, is a remarkable technology that aligns with the Bass lab's mission - to bring to life stories that were previously misrepresented or inaccurately portrayed through the ethical use of AI. From GRX’s instruction and training about incorporating photogrammetry, Bass Lab took a significant step forward, breathing new life into images and exploring how this technology can redefine the boundaries of art, its interpretation, and its impact within the realm of social justice.

The goal of this specific project was to select an image from Kara Walker’s “Cut to the Quick” traveling exhibit that they felt most resonated with Malcolm X’s legacy. The 3D images selected will then become multimedia companions to a project Bass Lab students are producing called the Second Draft Project podcast, a groundbreaking interactive oral history series highlighting the voices of Black Americans who are connected to pivotal moments in our nation’s fight for social justice. And through this collaborative experiment aided by GRX, an invaluable learning environment was created with a shared sense of unity and curiosity.  Read more about this experience here in the USC Annenberg Bass Lab Fall Newsletter.

The Intersection of Photogrammetry and Social Justice

The intersection of photogrammetry and social justice is a fascinating realm that holds immense potential. By capturing and preserving marginalized communities, historical landmarks, and environmental changes, we can raise awareness and promote empathy. Through immersive experiences, we can transport individuals to the frontlines of social issues, enabling them to witness the impact firsthand and inspire action.

The role of creatives and storytellers in this context is pivotal. By harnessing the power of photogrammetry, we can create narratives that transcend traditional mediums, allowing individuals to step into the shoes of others and experience their realities. This empathetic connection has the potential to break down barriers, challenge biases, and foster a more inclusive society.
